Nocte is a major tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, whose ancestry can be traced back to various places of Myanmar. Their language falls within Tibeto-Burman group.
With a population of more than 1,00,000, the Noctes live in the Patkai Hills of Tirap and Rajanagar in Changlang. A hundred families migrated to Assam in the 1800s and now live in Pontuan, Naharkatia.
The Nocte tribe is known for their chieftainship practice, administrative skills with grassroot level of democracy, salt trade, flintlock rifles, wood crafts, rich culture and head-hunting.

On June 27, 2025, the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Tirap district, Arunachal Pradesh, officially recognised two Nocte freedom fighters - Wangto Lowang, the then Chief of Kheti village, and Wangmaan Lowangdong, the then Chief of Borduria village - for fighting against the expansion of British rule in the region.
